Ideal L2 Fault Code: Ignition Lockout Causes and What to Check

Ideal boiler showing L2? It means the boiler tried to light and failed. The checks you can safely make, how to reset it, why it keeps coming back and when you need a Gas Safe engineer.

Quick Answer

L2 on an Ideal boiler is an ignition lockout: the boiler tried to light the burner, did not detect a flame, and shut down for safety. Check that other gas appliances work, that a prepayment meter has credit, that the gas valve under the boiler is open and, in freezing weather, that the condensate pipe is not frozen. Then reset the boiler once, following the user guide for your model. If L2 comes back, stop resetting and book a Gas Safe engineer, because the cause is usually a part such as the ignition electrode, flame sensing, gas valve or PCB.

Key Takeaways

  • L2 means the boiler could not establish a flame, so it locked out for safety.
  • Gas supply problems are the first thing to rule out: meter credit, the emergency control valve and other gas appliances.
  • A frozen or blocked condensate pipe is a common cause of lockouts in cold snaps.
  • One reset after checking the basics is reasonable. Repeated resets do not fix the fault.
  • If L2 returns, the cause is inside the boiler and needs a Gas Safe engineer.
  • Smell gas? Leave the fault code alone, get out and call 0800 111 999.

L2 on an Ideal boiler means an ignition lockout. The boiler tried to light, did not detect a flame, and shut itself down for safety. Before you reset it, check that your other gas appliances work, that a prepayment meter has credit, that the gas valve under the boiler is open and, if it is freezing outside, that the condensate pipe has not frozen. Reset once. If L2 comes back, the fault is inside the boiler and needs a Gas Safe engineer rather than more resets.

What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?

Ideal uses L codes for lockouts, where the boiler has stopped and will not restart until it is reset. The Logic Code Combi ESP1 user guide lists L2 as ignition lockout, separately from F2, which is flame loss while running. Each time the boiler needs to heat, the fan starts, the gas valve opens and the ignition electrode sparks. A sensor then checks that a flame has formed. If it does not detect a flame within a set time, usually after a few attempts, the boiler closes the gas valve and shows L2.

That makes L2 a symptom rather than a diagnosis. It tells you the boiler could not light, not why. The reason can be something as simple as the gas being off, or a failed part inside the boiler. Check the fault table in your own user guide, because Ideal makes several ranges, including Logic, Vogue and Instinct, and the controls differ between them.

Smell gas? Do not reset the boiler or touch electrical switches. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can do so safely, open windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Our gas leak guide explains what happens next.

Checks you can safely make

These checks are all outside the boiler casing. Do not remove the front panel. Anything behind it is Gas Safe work.

1

Is the gas on?

Try the gas hob, if you have one. If that will not light either, the problem is the gas supply rather than the boiler.

2

Prepayment meter credit

Running out of credit, or a meter that needs a new top-up code, is one of the most common reasons for L2. Check the meter display, including any emergency credit.

3

Emergency control valve and boiler gas cock

The lever next to the gas meter should run in line with the pipe. There is also a gas isolating valve on the pipe under the boiler. If someone has recently had work done, check neither has been left off.

4

The condensate pipe in cold weather

If the plastic pipe that runs outside from the boiler is frozen, the boiler cannot drain its condensate and will lock out. Pour warm, not boiling, water along the outside section at ground level, then reset.

5

Look at the flue terminal outside

Something blocking the flue, such as a bag, nest or new cladding, can stop the boiler lighting. Look, but do not reach into it or remove the terminal cover.

If other gas appliances are also dead and the meter has credit, contact your gas supplier. If you suspect a problem with the supply to the whole building, which does happen in London blocks, check with neighbours or the managing agent before booking a boiler engineer.

Resetting an Ideal boiler

Once the basic checks are done, reset the boiler once. On most Ideal models this is either a reset button or a reset position on the mode knob, and the user guide says how long to hold it. Give the boiler a few minutes to go through its start-up sequence and try to light.

  • It lights and stays on: the lockout may have been caused by the gas supply or condensate. Keep an eye on it over the next few days, especially if the weather turns cold again.
  • It shows L2 again straight away or within days: stop resetting. The boiler is telling you something inside is not working.

Resetting over and over does not fix an ignition fault, and on some boilers the controls will block further resets after a number of attempts. Write down the code and when it happened, and book an engineer.

Why L2 keeps coming back

If the gas supply is fine and the condensate pipe is clear, a recurring L2 is usually down to one of these parts inside the boiler:

PartWhat goes wrongSigns you might notice
Ignition electrode and leadWorn, dirty or badly gapped electrode, or a damaged lead, so the spark is weak or missingClicking with no light, or no clicking at all
Flame sensingThe boiler lights but does not detect the flame, so it shuts off anywayYou hear it light for a few seconds, then it stops
Gas valveThe valve is not opening properly or at the right pressureFan runs, sparks, but no ignition
Fan and flueAir flow is not right, often from a failing fan or a partly blocked flueUnusual fan noise, lockouts more often in wind
Condensate trapSludge blocks the trap inside the boiler even when the outside pipe is clearGurgling from the boiler, lockouts in any weather
PCBThe control board is not managing the ignition sequence properlyIntermittent lockouts, other odd display behaviour

The only way to tell these apart is testing by an engineer, which is why the model and a record of when L2 happens are so useful. Our guide to a boiler that keeps going out covers similar ignition faults on older boilers.

What an engineer will check

A Gas Safe engineer will usually confirm the gas supply and pressure at the boiler, check the flue and combustion, inspect and test the ignition electrode and flame sensing, clean the condensate trap and look for any stored fault history. Some parts, like an electrode, are a quick fix. Others, like a gas valve or PCB, depend on availability for your model.

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally work on your boiler. You can ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the back of it lists the type of work they are doing.

Booking a repair

Before the visit, write down the full model name from the front of the boiler, how many times L2 has appeared, whether it happens in cold weather only or all the time, and whether you hear clicking or the burner lighting before it locks out. If your boiler shows other codes on different days, note those too. Ideal's F1 and F2 codes are covered in their own guides, and our boiler error codes guide explains why codes need matching to the exact model.

If you rent, tell your landlord or agent in writing. Boiler repairs are normally the landlord's responsibility, and they may have their own engineer or cover in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?

L2 is an ignition lockout. The boiler tried to light the burner, did not detect a flame within its safety time, and shut itself down. It is a safety lockout rather than a sign of immediate danger, but the boiler will not heat until the cause is fixed and it is reset.

How do I reset an Ideal boiler showing L2?

Check the gas supply and condensate pipe first, then use the reset button or reset position on the controls as described in the user guide for your model. Allow a few minutes for the boiler to try to light again. If L2 appears again, stop resetting and call a Gas Safe engineer.

Can a frozen condensate pipe cause L2?

Yes. When the condensate pipe freezes, water backs up inside the boiler and it will not run, which commonly shows as an ignition lockout. Thaw the pipe with warm, not boiling, water on the outside section at ground level, then reset. Never climb a ladder to do this in icy conditions.

Why does my Ideal boiler keep going to L2?

If the gas supply is fine and the condensate pipe is clear, a recurring L2 usually points to a fault with the ignition electrode or lead, flame sensing, the gas valve, the fan or flue, or the PCB. These are inside the boiler and need diagnosing by a Gas Safe engineer.

Is it safe to keep resetting a boiler on L2?

No. One reset after the basic checks is reasonable. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that will not light does not fix the fault and can make some problems worse. If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
