Noisy Boiler in London? 7 Sounds and What Each One Means
A boiler making unusual sounds is rarely dangerous but always worth diagnosing. The sound is often the most reliable clue to what is failing -- and catching it early is the difference between a £250 repair and a £1,200 replacement.
Sound Diagnosis
7 Boiler Sounds and What Each One Means
Match the sound your boiler is making to the entries below. Each includes the likely cause, urgency level, recommended fix and typical cost.
Kettling
MediumRumbling sound like a boiling kettle, often continuous when the boiler is running
Cause: Limescale deposits inside the heat exchanger restrict water flow. Water overheats locally and steam bubbles burst -- identical to a furring kettle.
Fix: Chemical descale at early stage; heat exchanger replacement if damage has occurred. Annual service with inhibitor treatment prevents recurrence.
Banging on firing
Medium-HighA single loud bang or thud each time the boiler attempts to ignite
Cause: Delayed ignition -- gas builds up briefly before lighting, then ignites all at once. Caused by a dirty burner, low gas pressure or a failing ignition electrode.
Fix: Gas Safe engineer to clean or replace the burner and inspect the ignition assembly. Do not keep resetting if banging continues -- it stresses the heat exchanger.
Whistling or high-pitched squealing
MediumA continuous or intermittent high-pitched squeal or whine, usually when the boiler is heating
Cause: Pump bearings failing (motor whine) or air being forced through a restriction in the heating circuit at speed.
Fix: Bleed radiators and check pressure first (DIY). If whistling continues, the pump may need replacement.
Gurgling
LowA liquid bubbling sound, often heard from the boiler or pipes when heating is running
Cause: Air trapped in the heating circuit. Common after recent system work, refilling after pressure drop, or if a small leak has let air in.
Fix: Bleed each radiator in the house starting furthest from the boiler. Repressurise to 1.2-1.5 bar after bleeding. If gurgling returns within days, there may be a leak.
Vibrating or constant humming
LowA low hum or vibration that may continue even when the boiler is not actively heating
Cause: Pump running when it should be off, loose pump mounting bracket, or worn pump internals causing vibration through the boiler casing.
Fix: If intermittent, tighten the pump mounting bracket (engineer task). If constant, the pump may need replacement.
Clicking without igniting
HighRepeated clicking sounds as the boiler tries to fire, but no ignition and no heat or hot water
Cause: Ignition fault -- the spark generator is firing but the burner is not lighting. Possible causes: failed electrode, no gas supply, or gas valve fault.
Fix: Try reset once. If clicking continues without ignition after two attempts, stop -- repeated failed ignition attempts can flood the heat exchanger with unburnt gas. Call a Gas Safe engineer.
Ticking when cooling down
NormalSoft ticking or creaking from the boiler area after it shuts down, lasting 5-15 minutes
Cause: Thermal expansion and contraction of the heat exchanger and flue pipes as they cool. This is a normal physical process -- not a fault.
Fix: No action needed. If ticking occurs while the boiler is running (not just cooling), it is a different issue and should be investigated.
The Dominant London Complaint
Kettling: Why London Boilers Are More Vulnerable
What it is
Kettling is the rumbling, bubbling sound produced when limescale (calcium carbonate) builds up on the inside of the heat exchanger. Water flow is restricted; the trapped water overheats and reaches boiling point locally, creating steam bubbles that collapse with a rumbling sound -- identical to a furring kettle.
Why London is worse
London tap water contains 300mg/l of calcium carbonate -- some of the hardest water in England. That is 3x the scale buildup rate compared to soft-water areas. A boiler that would quietly serve 15 years in Manchester may start kettling after just 6-8 years in London.
The risk if ignored
Localised overheating cracks the heat exchanger or creates pinholes in the metal. Once this happens, a descale is no longer an option -- the heat exchanger must be replaced at £500-£1,200. Caught early (within 1-2 seasons of the noise starting), a chemical descale at £200-£350 resolves it entirely.
Prevention
An annual boiler service catches early scale before the rumbling starts. Adding a magnetic filter (Magnaclean or similar) to the return pipe traps magnetite sludge. A scale inhibitor dosing pot on the cold feed further reduces calcium deposition. These cost £120-£250 fitted and are standard on new boiler installations.

Rate of scale buildup in London boilers compared to soft water areas
Typical time before kettling starts in London (vs 12-15 yrs nationally)
Maximum heat exchanger replacement cost if kettling is left untreated
London generates more kettling complaints than any other UK region. Annual descale at service stage (£80-£120 as part of service) prevents the £500-£1,200 replacement.
Should you switch the boiler off?
Safe to leave on
- Kettling (rumbling) -- book an engineer but no emergency
- Gurgling -- bleed radiators first
- Vibrating or humming -- monitor, book engineer
- Ticking when cooling -- this is normal
Switch off and call an engineer
- Loud bang each time the boiler fires
- Clicking that will not stop without igniting
- Any noise alongside a gas smell -- evacuate immediately and call 0800 111 999
- Any noise after a CO alarm activation -- get out first

Safety
When to Call an Engineer Immediately
Gas smell alongside any noise
Leave the property immediately. Do not use light switches. Call the National Gas Emergency line: 0800 111 999.
Banging that gets louder or more frequent
Escalating banging on firing suggests heat exchanger stress or damage. Each bang risks cracking the exchanger further.
Clicking that will not stop
Repeated failed ignition attempts can flood the heat exchanger with unburnt gas. Do not keep pressing reset -- call an engineer.
Any noise after a CO alarm
Carbon monoxide has no smell. If a CO alarm has sounded, evacuate immediately. Do not re-enter until the property has been checked by a Gas Safe engineer.
