What Pushes Smart Thermostat Installation Cost Up or Down
Two homes can fit the same Nest or Hive and pay quite different amounts. The thermostat itself is the same; the difference is almost always in the wiring and the heating system behind it. These are the things we look at when we quote.
Combi or cylinder system
A combi boiler only needs heating control, so the swap is simple. A system or regular boiler with a hot water cylinder needs the thermostat to control hot water as well, which means wiring into the wiring centre and motorised valves. That is the main reason jobs move from the lower row of the price table to the higher one.
Where the receiver goes
Hive, Tado and most Honeywell kits need a receiver wired at the boiler or at the old programmer position. If the existing programmer is next to the boiler it replaces it neatly. If the boiler is in a loft or a cupboard with no spare cable, extra wiring adds time.
Wi-Fi reach
A smart thermostat that keeps dropping off the network is worse than a dumb one. In London flats with thick party walls or a boiler in a basement, the hub sometimes needs to sit nearer the router. We test signal before fixing anything to the wall.
Old controls and faults
If the existing thermostat or programmer was never wired correctly, or a zone valve is sticking, it has to be put right before the new thermostat will work properly. We tell you before starting if we find this, rather than adding it to the bill afterwards.
Replacing a standard thermostat instead
Not everyone wants an app. Swapping a worn-out dial or programmable room thermostat for a new wired or wireless one is a shorter job than a smart install, and the same wiring questions apply: whether it controls heating only or heating and hot water, and where the receiver goes. If rooms still heat unevenly once the thermostat is sorted, the fix is usually at the radiators, with thermostatic radiator valves or radiator balancing. Can I install a smart thermostat myself?
Some kits are built for self-install, mainly battery-powered wireless thermostats that pair with a plug-in or pre-wired receiver. If the job means mains wiring at the boiler, at the wiring centre or on a system with a hot water cylinder and zone valves, use a competent installer. A wrong connection can stop the boiler firing or leave the heating running non-stop, and anything inside the boiler casing is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you start a DIY install and the boiler stops responding, turn it off at the fused spur and call us rather than guessing at the terminals.
Is it cheaper to buy the thermostat myself and pay for fitting only?
Often, yes, if you find the unit on offer, and we are happy to fit a thermostat you have bought. Check two things first: that the model suits your boiler (OpenTherm or on/off, combi or cylinder system), and that you have the receiver or hub that comes with it. With supply and fit we choose a compatible model and deal with any fault on it, so you have one point of contact.
