Report a shared drain blockage to Thames Water

Call Thames Water on 0800 316 9800 (free). They will arrange a CCTV inspection of the shared drain and carry out any required work at no cost to you if the blockage is in their section.

Plunger

Kitchen sinks, wash basins · 10-15 minutes

Cover the overflow with a damp cloth, place the plunger cup squarely over the drain and push-pull sharply 8-10 times. The pressure wave dislodges the trap blockage.

Boiling water + washing-up liquid

Kitchen sink (FOG blockages) · 10 minutes

Pour a good squeeze of washing-up liquid down the drain, follow with a full kettle of boiling water slowly. The surfactant emulsifies the fat and the hot water melts and flushes it through.

Drain rods

External inspection chamber / manhole · 20-60 minutes

Lift the manhole cover, thread rods together and push clockwise into the drain toward the blockage. Turn only clockwise -- anti-clockwise unscrews the rods and leaves them in the drain. Available from Screwfix or local hire centres.

When DIY won't work -- call a professional

The blockage is in the main drain run below the inspection chamber, not at the trap. Multiple fittings are backing up simultaneously. Water returns after clearing. There's a foul smell from inspection chambers that weren't affected before. These signs point to a blockage or structural fault in the main drain run -- beyond what rods can reach.

Manual rods pushed through the inspection chamber to break up and dislodge solid blockages. The simplest and cheapest method for straightforward blockages close to the inspection chamber.

Water blasted through the drain at 4,000 PSI. Removes fat, grease, silt and root tentacles and leaves the pipe walls clean. The gold standard for stubborn blockages and preventive maintenance.

A rotary cutting head mounted on the jetting machine shreds root growth inside the pipe. Common in Victorian London gardens with mature plane trees, sycamores and oaks. Clears the pipe but roots regrow in 2-5 years without relining.

A drain camera is run through the pipe to locate the exact blockage, identify its cause, and assess the pipe condition. Targeted jetting then clears it. Used when the blockage is unclear, recurring or has multiple causes.
