Radiator Bleeding London
Cold spots, gurgling noises, or radiators that refuse to heat up — trapped air is usually the culprit. We bleed and balance central heating systems across London, same day. Fixed prices, no surprises.
Signs Your Radiators Need Bleeding
Air gets into central heating systems over time — especially in older London properties with gravity-fed systems, or after boiler repairs that let the system drain. Here's what to look for:
Cold at the top, hot at the bottom
Classic trapped air symptom — the air bubble sits at the top and blocks water from circulating upward.
Gurgling or trickling noises
Water passing through air pockets creates noise inside the radiator. Bleeding silences it.
Radiator completely cold
If the radiator is stone cold despite heating being on, it may be full of air or need balancing.
High heating bills
Radiators not working efficiently mean your boiler runs longer to reach temperature — costing more.
How to Bleed a Radiator — 5 Steps
Turn off heating
Switch off central heating. Wait 20 minutes for the system to cool — scalding water exits first otherwise.
Find the bleed valve
Top corner of the radiator — small square peg inside a round hole. Some modern rads have a flat-head slot.
Open the valve
Insert bleed key, turn anti-clockwise ¼ turn. Hold a cloth underneath for drips.
Release the air
Hissing air escapes. When water flows steadily with no air, close the valve clockwise. Don't overtighten.
Check boiler pressure
Bleeding drops system pressure. Gauge should read 1.0–1.5 bar. Top up via filling loop if below 1 bar.
Not comfortable doing this yourself? No problem — we're available same day across London and can bleed, balance, and repressurise your entire system in a single visit.

Why Do Radiators Keep Filling With Air?
If you're bleeding the same radiators every few weeks, there's an underlying problem. In London — where much of the housing stock is pre-1980 — the most common causes are:
| Root Cause | How to spot it | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetite sludge & corrosion | Dark grey/black water when bleeding, noisy boiler | Power flush + inhibitor dose |
| Failing automatic air vent | One area of the system constantly airlocked | Replace the auto air vent (£95–£120) |
| Micro-leak in system pipework | Pressure keeps dropping even without bleeding | Leak detection and repair |
| Undersized header tank | Gravity-fed systems, older London houses | Header tank check / expansion vessel |
| Electrolytic corrosion (mixed metals) | Steel rads + copper pipes + no inhibitor | Inhibitor dose + system flush |

Radiator Bleeding FAQs
How do I know if my radiator needs bleeding?
The clearest signs are: cold patches at the top of the radiator while the bottom is hot, gurgling or trickling sounds inside the radiator, or a radiator that's completely cold despite the heating being on. Air trapped at the top prevents hot water circulating to the full radiator surface.
How much does radiator bleeding cost in London?
A single radiator bleed is £45. A full system bleed and balance for up to 8 radiators costs £120. If your boiler pressure needs topping up after bleeding, that's £65 (or included in the full system service). We carry bleed keys and pressure gauges — no extra charge for equipment.
Why do my radiators keep needing bleeding?
Radiators that repeatedly fill with air usually indicate one of three things: a micro-leak somewhere in the system allowing air in, a failing automatic air vent, or hydrogen gas produced by corrosion inside the system (black magnetite sludge). If bleeding is needed more than once per heating season, call us — we'll diagnose the root cause, which may require a power flush.
Can I bleed my own radiators?
Yes — it's a simple DIY job. You need a radiator bleed key (£1–£2 from any hardware shop), a cloth, and a bowl. The tricky part is remembering to check and top up boiler pressure afterwards. If you're not confident about the boiler or your system has multiple radiators all needing attention, call us.
What's the difference between bleeding and balancing radiators?
Bleeding removes trapped air from a radiator. Balancing adjusts the lockshield valve on each radiator so hot water flows evenly through the whole system — preventing the radiator nearest the boiler from getting all the heat while far-away radiators stay lukewarm. Both should be done together for the best result.
Will bleeding radiators affect my boiler pressure?
Yes. Releasing trapped air lowers water volume in the system, which drops boiler pressure. After bleeding, check the pressure gauge — it should be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar (cold). If it's below 1 bar, repressurise via the filling loop under your boiler. If you're unsure how to do this, we can do it as part of the same visit.
