Diagnose Your Cold Radiator
Cold at top, warm at bottom
Cause: Trapped air
DIY: Bleed the radiator (bleed key on top valve)
Pro fix: If air returns within weeks: auto air vent or micro-leak trace
Cold at bottom, warm at top
Cause: Magnetite sludge
DIY: None — sludge is heavy and won't flush with home methods
Pro fix: Power flush (£350–£550) + magnetic filter + inhibitor
Completely cold, others hot
Cause: Seized TRV or closed lockshield
DIY: Check TRV head pin, open lockshield valve cap
Pro fix: TRV replacement £85–£160; lockshield £85–£150
All radiators cold
Cause: Low pressure, pump, zone valve, programmer
DIY: Check boiler pressure (should be 1.0–1.5 bar)
Pro fix: Pump replacement £180–£320; zone valve £150–£250
Radiator warm but room stays cold
Cause: Radiator undersized for room volume
DIY: Check TRV is fully open (setting 5)
Pro fix: Radiator upsizing £250–£500 inc. part
One radiator hot, adjacent one cold
Cause: Balancing issue — uneven flow distribution
DIY: Partially close hot radiator's lockshield to redirect flow
Pro fix: System balancing (all radiators): £120–£200
How to Bleed a Radiator in London
Switch the heating off and let the system cool for 20 minutes (you can bleed with heating on, but hot water causes steam burns).
Locate the bleed valve — a square-head pin at one end of the top of the radiator. Hold a cloth underneath it.
Insert the bleed key and turn anti-clockwise a quarter turn. You will hear a hiss as air escapes.
When water appears steadily (no more hissing), close the valve clockwise. Don't overtighten.
Check the boiler pressure gauge — it should read 1.0–1.5 bar. If below 1.0 bar, open the filling loop until pressure returns. If you're unsure how: call us.
If the radiator re-fills with air within 2–3 weeks, you have a persistent air entry point — most commonly a failing auto air vent, a micro-leak allowing air ingress, or a pump that is drawing air in at the suction point. Call us to trace the root cause rather than repeatedly bleeding.

Cold Radiator FAQs
Why is my radiator cold at the top but warm at the bottom in London?
Trapped air. Bleed the radiator with a bleed key — you will hear a hiss, then water appears. Close the valve. Check boiler pressure afterwards (1.0–1.5 bar). If air returns within weeks, there's a persistent air entry point — call us to trace it.
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom but warm at the top in London?
Magnetite sludge settled at the bottom, blocking flow channels. Very common in London's older iron pipework. Fix: power flush (£350–£550) + magnetic filter. DIY methods won't shift heavy sludge.
Why is my radiator completely cold in London?
Most likely a seized TRV pin (try pushing it with a screwdriver — if stuck, replace the TRV, £85–£160) or a closed lockshield valve. If multiple radiators are cold, check boiler pressure first.
Why are all my radiators cold in London?
Check: boiler pressure (recharge if below 0.5 bar), programmer/thermostat settings, and listen to the pump (should hum briefly when heating starts). Silent pump = failed pump (£180–£320). Boiler lockout code on display: call us with the code.
How do I know if my London radiators need a power flush?
Signs: multiple radiators cold at the bottom, slow warm-up, boiler kettling, brown water when bleeding, boiler locking out repeatedly. London's older iron pipework and hard water accelerate sludge build-up. Always power flush before installing a new boiler.
How much does it cost to fix a cold radiator in London?
Diagnosis £65 (deducted from repair). Bleed: £65. TRV replacement: £85–£160. Power flush: £350–£550. Magnetic filter: £150–£220. Pump: £180–£320. Fixed quote before any work.
