Which Shower Works With Your London Boiler System?
🏠 Combi boiler (most common in London flats and modern houses)
✓ Works well:
- Thermostatic mixer shower ★
- Standard mixer shower
- Electric shower
✗ Avoid:
- Power showers (the combi can't supply enough flow rate)
- Pump-assisted showers (pressure can't be boosted after a combi)
💡 The thermostatic mixer is the best choice — takes hot water direct from the combi at mains pressure, anti-scald protection built in.
🏠 Gravity-fed system with hot cylinder (older London houses, conversions)
✓ Works well:
- Power shower
- Pump-assisted mixer
- Electric shower
- Standard mixer (if loft tank height gives enough pressure)
✗ Avoid:
- Standard mixer if tank is less than 1 metre above the shower head — pressure will be inadequate
💡 Check how high your loft tank is relative to the shower head. 3+ metres gives good pressure without a pump.
🏠 Unvented hot water cylinder (Megaflo / pressurised system)
✓ Works well:
- Thermostatic mixer shower ★
- Digital shower
- Standard mixer
✗ Avoid:
- Power showers (already at mains pressure — a pump would over-pressurise the system)
💡 Unvented systems give excellent mains-pressure hot water — a thermostatic or digital shower performs at its best here.
Shower Installation FAQs — London
How much does shower installation cost in London?
Shower installation costs in London vary by shower type and whether you supply the unit yourself. Fitting a customer-supplied mixer shower onto existing pipework costs £150–£220 (1.5–2.5 hours). Fitting a customer-supplied electric shower (plumbing work only — electrical connection by a Part P certified electrician) costs £180–£250. Supply and fit of a thermostatic mixer shower costs £280–£480 including the unit. Supply and fit of a basic electric shower costs £280–£420 including unit and Part P electrical connection. A complete shower enclosure installation (tray, screen and mixer) costs £400–£800 depending on complexity. We give a fixed quote before any work starts.
What type of shower is best for a London property?
The best shower type depends on your hot water system. For combi boiler properties (the most common setup in London): a thermostatic mixer shower is ideal — it takes hot water directly from the combi boiler and maintains a constant temperature. Avoid power showers with combis as the boiler can't deliver sufficient flow rate. For gravity-fed hot water systems (with a hot water cylinder and cold tank in the loft): a power shower or pump-assisted mixer works well if the loft tank is at least 3 metres above the shower head. Electric showers work with any system as they heat their own water independently — good if you have an unreliable or small hot water cylinder, or want a shower that works even when the boiler is off.
Do I need an electrician to install a shower in London?
Electric showers require both a plumber and a Part P certified electrician (or a single tradesperson qualified in both). The electrical work — installing a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, RCD protection, and the pull cord switch — must be carried out or certified by a Part P registered electrician and either self-notified to building control or notified by a competent person scheme member. Mixer and thermostatic showers that use your existing hot and cold supply do not require any electrical work (the shower controls are purely mechanical/hydraulic) and can be fitted by a plumber alone. If you need a combined plumbing and electrical installation, we work with our own certified electricians and can co-ordinate a single-visit installation.
Why does my shower have low pressure in London?
Low shower pressure in London is extremely common and has several causes depending on your system. On combi boilers: limescale in the boiler's plate heat exchanger (from London's very hard water — 280–320mg/l) restricts flow to the shower. Descaling or heat exchanger replacement restores pressure. On gravity-fed systems: if the cold tank in the loft is too low or the head of pressure is insufficient, a pump-assisted shower or separate shower pump resolves this. Across all systems: limescale inside shower hoses, handsets and restrictors (the small disc in the shower fitting) dramatically reduces flow. Cleaning or replacing these costs almost nothing. We diagnose the specific cause of your low pressure and recommend the most cost-effective fix.
Can you replace a bath with a shower in a London flat?
Yes — bath-to-shower conversions are one of the most common jobs we do in London flats, where bathroom space is limited. The work involves: removing the bath (we can arrange disposal), installing a shower tray and waste, tiling or fitting a wet panel to the walls, fitting a shower enclosure or glass screen, and connecting the shower. The existing hot and cold supply that fed the bath taps can typically be reused for the shower, keeping costs down. A complete bath-to-shower conversion costs £600–£1,500 depending on the shower type chosen, tiling requirements, and whether the waste run is straightforward. We project-manage the full conversion including any tiling subcontract.
How long does shower installation take in London?
A like-for-like shower replacement (same position, same type) takes 2–3 hours. A new shower installation with existing supply pipework available takes 2.5–4 hours. A complete shower enclosure installation (tray, screen, mixer) takes 4–8 hours depending on tiling. A bath-to-shower conversion is typically a 1–2 day job. We book a morning slot for complex installations so there's no time pressure if the job runs longer than expected. All our shower installations are tested for flow, temperature stability and leaks before we leave.
